Foodie Heaven: Cookstr Launches

Some girls buy shoes. Some buy handbags. I buy cookbooks. Well, at least I used to buy cookbooks. These days, like most people, I’m not buying much of anything. A couple of months ago I took my dear friend Brooke’s suggestion and started borrowing cookbooks from the library. But I am seriously horrible when it comes to returning library books on time. With the money I now owe in fines, I could have easily bought a half dozen used cookbooks.

Fortunately, I just learned about a new website called Cookstr, which is currently is Beta stages. Launched by former Hyperion Editor-in-Chief Will Schwalbe, this clean, easy-to-use website is essentially a database of recipes from the country’s leading chefs and cookbook authors. And unlike a lot of new food-oriented websites, which offer up a wealth of user-generated content, Cookstr focuses on chefs and cookbook authors—the people who know food best because they live it. Search for Alice Waters, Nancy Silverton or Dan Barber and it’s like hitting a culinary jackpot; there are dozens of recipes from each of these celebrity chefs and many more. And the site offers a variety of ways to quickly search their database: by chef, cuisine, method, ingredient, course or holiday. They also plan on adding a Tips & Techniques section as well as a Menus section, perfect for coordinating disparate dishes into a cohesive meal. They’ve even got a StumpleUpon-style randomizer for when you’re at a complete loss for ideas.

As I’m learning to develop my own recipes, I look to the pros for guidance, like turning to your best, married girlfriend for advice about a boy. With more than 200 chefs and cookbook authors already contributing recipes to the database, it’s like having the country’s best gastronomic minds at my fingertips. I’m book-marking it in my browser right now and you should too. And while Cookstr won’t replace sitting down with a good cookbook, it will at least narrow down which ones I’ll buy when the money starts flowing again.

Hi, here’s a fun and unique Thanksgiving site. Fancast has put together a full Turkey Day menu compiled of recipes from some of the biggest celebrity chefs out there, from appetizers through dessert. (Recipes from such superstar chefs as INA GARTEN, GIADA DE LAURENTIIS, GUY FIERI, and RACHEL RAY.) You can print-out their recipes and watch video clips of the chefs cooking or just reminiscing about the big day at

*cough, cough* I think I’ve lost my library privileges a long time ago. My fines went through the roof. Maybe if I changed my name…???…I could get a new card!
